Description

We're hiring an Intermediate Biologist at Gitxaała Environmental Services to join our team and share their wealth of experience in British Columbia's aquatic or terrestrial biology.

We are seeking an Intermediate Biologist to support our growing company and join our senior management team. We are looking for innovative and passionate biologists who find solutions for our team and clients in a responsible and sustainable way. The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of projects, providing senior technical oversight, supporting business development, and mentoring staff. This role offers an exciting opportunity for career growth alongside our team of consulting professionals, who deliver practical, locally informed environmental solutions for major projects throughout the region.

This is a full-time role with 40 hours per week, and it is conducted in-person and on-site in unpopulated areas and from work camps. This position has a wage range of $27 per hour to $35 per hour.

We're looking for a candidate with at least a bachelor's degree in biology or a related discipline, but a master's degree in biology or a related discipline is preferred. Furthermore, the successful candidate must either be a Registered Professional Biologist or be eligible to obtain the designation. Additionally, the Intermediate Biologist should demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development and undergoing further training in environmental monitoring and assessments.

This role requires current knowledge of BC fish and wildlife species and ecology, BC and Federal legislation, government agencies, and permitting procedures as they relate to this role and its duties, and experience showing management, design, and execution of projects. Additionally, the successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in managing project teams over multiple years.

The successful candidate must be willing to travel to different sites, including by car, boat, ATV or UTV, or helicopter. They should also have a BC class 5 driver's licence and access to a personal vehicle. A drone pilot licence, SVOP, MED-A3/SVD-BS, and ROC-M are all considered strong assets. Level 1 First Aid, H2S Alive, and other similar certifications are also considered assets.

Duties

  • Environmental monitoring including performing marine mammal observation, hydroacoustic monitoring, surface water, groundwater, soil, and/or sediment sampling, bird nest sweeps, fish and/or amphibian salvage.
  • Carrying out field work in support of environmental, habitat monitoring, and archaeological studies.
  • Collecting baseline biophysical data in marine, terrestrial, and aquatic environments as part of project Environmental Assessments and/or related monitoring.
  • Calibrating, maintaining, and using field instrumentation and equipment including GPS, water quality probes, dataloggers, etc.
  • Demonstrating attention to detail in completing administrative, Health and Safety, and field documentation.
  • Adhering to company and client Health and Safety, Quality Assurance / Quality Control, and Drug and Alcohol (incl. testing) policies and programs.
  • Travelling to work locations in unpopulated areas (including by ATV/UTV, boat, or helicopter), and the ability to work out of camps and perform night shift monitoring.
  • Working collaboratively and constructively with a variety of clients, co-workers, and contractors in a team-oriented setting.
  • Managing project teams and mentoring staff.
  • Developing work plans and project budgets.
  • Participating in business development activities.
  • Providing technical expertise.
  • Supporting and leading field programs.
  • Conducting data collection, compilation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Assisting with the preparation and submission of permits and authorizations.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience managing, designing, and executing environmental projects.
  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams over multiple years.
  • Current knowledge of BC fish and wildlife species and ecology.
  • Current knowledge of BC and federal legislation, government agencies and permitting procedures.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development in environmental monitoring and assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and GIS is considered an asset.
  • Experience and/or interest in sampling of various environmental media.
  • Experience and/or interest in riparian assessments, stream classification, and/or archaeological monitoring is also considered an asset.
  • A drone pilot licence, SVOP, MED A3/SVOP-BS, and ROC-M certifications are considered strong assets.
  • Positive attitude towards implementing health and safety systems.
  • Level 1 First Aid, H2S Alive, and similar certifications are considered assets.
  • Willingness to travel for work.
  • Access to a personal vehicle and a valid BC Class 5 driver's licence.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline is required.
  • Master's degree in Biology or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Registered Professional Biologist designation or the ability to obtain the designation.
