At Gitxaała Enviornmental Serves (GES), we are hiring an Environmental Monitor to join our team in Prince Rupert.

We are actively working on major energy and port development projects in Northwest British Columbia and are recruiting to meet demand for a local and trained workforce to service the growing needs of clients in northwest BC. A convergence of industries in the expanding port city of Prince Rupert sets the stage for the successful candidate to work with a diverse range of clients, our partners, and their contractors across multiple natural resource and infrastructure sectors. An ability to work collaboratively and constructively with a variety of clients, co-workers, and contractors in a team-oriented setting, as well as communicate effectively both verbally and through the written word, is therefore, critical.

This role includes field work in support of environmental monitoring, habitat monitoring, and archaeological studies. Some of the work included in this position is environmental monitoring for marine mammals; hydroacoustic monitoring; surface water, groundwater, soil, and sediment sampling; bird nest sweeps; and fish and amphibian salvage. The successful candidate will also collect baseline biophysical data in marine, terrestrial, and aquatic environments as part of their environmental assessments and monitoring.

It is vital that the Environmental Monitor be capable of calibrating, maintaining, and using their field instruments and equipment, including their GPS, water quality probes, dataloggers, etc. as well as have the attention to detail and skill to complete administrative, health and safety, and field documentation. Adherence to health and safety, quality control, and dug and alcohol testing and policies is critical.

As such, we're looking for an Environmental Monitor with 1 to 3 years of experience, a Bachelor of Science or technical diploma in biology, environmental science, or another relevant discipline. We are also willing to consider candidates with Environmental Monitoring training or certification who also have demonstrated past work experience, training, and interest in the environmental field. Eligibility for registration with a professional association such as the BC College of Applied Biology or the BC Institute of Agrologists is an asset but not a requirement.

Other assets for this position include experience with MS Office and GIS; experience or interest in riparian assessments; stream classification, or archaeological monitoring; a drone pilot license, SVOP, MED-A3/SVD-BS, or ROC-M; and Level 1 First Aid, H2S Awareness/Alive, or other health and safety-related certifications.

This is an in-person position, based out of Prince Rupert, and the successful hire must relocate to or already live in Prince Rupert although we are willing to discuss a primary location in Terrace, BC or Kitimat, BC. This position includes travel to remote work locations (including by boat or helicopter) and the ability and willingness to work out of camps and perform night shift monitoring. Access to a personal vehicle and a valid BC class 5 driver's license is important.

The wage for this role is $27.50 to $35/hr, commensurate with experience. Field work will include overtime (1.5x rate) and weekend work.
